  1. The grooves on a club are important to getting backspin on a ball.  The deeper the grooves, the more spin the ball gets.  For this reason, it is important for not only the face of the golf club to be clean, but the grooves must be clean as well.  Since the grooves "cut" into the ball, a steeper descent angle produces more backspin as well.  Also, it is important to hit the ball before the ground.  If you hit the ground first, then less surface area of the grooves catches the ball, so less spin is produced.  It is also easiest to get backspin out of the sand because when you hit the ball, there is less resistance on follow-through, so the swing is smoother.  I hope this helps.

  2. Backspin is a result of a good golfswing and proper descending contact.

  3. You have to put it in the back of your stance and hit down on the back of the ball.  Get a plastic ball and practice chipping in your house.  You'll definitely see how the ball spins.  New wedges and a high spin ball also helps.

  4. It's easiest with high lofted clubs like a sand wedge or lob wedge. Open the face up, stand a little open to the target, and make a descending blow down your body lines toward the target. The effect you get is the grooves of the club face spinning the ball backwards while launching the ball in the air.

The type of ball is also important. "Soft" balls like most 4 piece balls are good to spin. Range balls however, aren't.

  5. Here's an article on it.

It is important to have a really clean lie and a good quality ball.

    Good luck

  6. try a steeper swing than usual and also put the ball in the back of your stance. Good luck!
