How do you get into radio broadcasting with no experience what so ever?

I just woke up one morning and realized I want to be on the radio.

That happens to many of us in the business.  Radio today is not what you may think it is.  Generally there is no one sitting around spinning records or even Cd's for that matter.  Most of the time radio stations now days are automated and you do you four hour shift in about 45 minutes.  This is called voice tracking.  The rest of your day may be spent on other mundane duties such as selling advertising, answering calls or even janitorial duties depending on the size of the station you are at.  If you are envisioning WKRP in Cincinnati and want to be Johnnie Fever - those days are essentially over.

That's not to say that radio can't be fun anymore or profitable anymore, but for the most part it's just like any other business now.  And unless you are in sales or management, you might be juggling two jobs just to make ends meet.

If you're an entertainer, such as a comedian or musician, being on the radio can be very useful for your career if they give you the freedom to say what you want.  But even that has been taken away at many stations where you just read canned "liner cards" with station slogans and things they want you to say.
