  1. Depending on how good you are there is always freelance. Submit your stuff to online portfolios and job boards

  2. Try multiple approaches:

Keep sending resumes out - you never know when a company may be willing to take a chance on you.

Get experience through volunteering with non-profits.  Volunteer work can be used on your resume.

Register with a number of temporary services - both general and specialized agencies (agencies that specialize in writers, graphic artists, computer specialists, etc...).

If you need an income immediately, start with the temp services.  You'll gain experience in the working world (although, not necessarily as a graphic designer initially) and begin networking with people you work with, which may lead you toward your career goals.  At the very least, you'll begin getting experience and earning a living.  Be sure to let your account executives at the temp services know that you would prefer work as a graphic artist.  But, be willing to accept other assignments.  It will assist you in networking, and help with your resume.

    Good luck!

  3. Go on craigslist and do some work for low money.  You also can try to look for an entry level position somewhere. But internships are always a good bet.

  4. do volunteer/unpaid interships in a related field while working boring entry-level jobs to pay rent and/or lie.

  5. That's a tough question...

A lot of people do go to school for this sort of thing, so you need to make it very clear in your cover letter/resume as to why you should be hired over these people. Perhaps you have several years of experience working in this field or doing volunteer work that relates. Because you aren't relying strictly on education (like most other people do) you may actually have an edge and solid reason as to why you should be hired instead of them!
