Check out the remarkable research on toxic mold removal done by environmental expert Dr Ed Close. Simply diffusing a therapeutic-grade essential oil regularly will likely result in an environment very hostel to mold.

The same household cleaner he uses to clean-up moldy buildings can be used to wash clothes. Depending on the size load, I add a cap-full or two. That's it. No other soap.

I read that if you put some vinegar in the water it will help kill mold...

I find using DampRids Mold and Mildew Remover and Preventor for fabrics not only removes the mold, but kills the spores so it won't grow back.  Bleach also kills mold, but it will damage many fabrics including synthetics where DampRid won't.  You can find it in the cleaning aisle at Lowes.
