How do you get permission to use songs for background music? I've e-mailed ASCAP and BMI - no response.?

I ride for a mounted drill team and we use a variety of songs to ride to. The National Competition administration says we must provide proof of permissive use regarding the music used. I can't get anyone at ASCAP or BMI to e-mail me back with instructions on what to do. Anyone here know? Thanks!

  1. Typically it isn't those groups that can give permission, but the ones that own the copyright on the music.  Each piece of music should have a copyright symbol on it, and who owns the rights.  Those are the people you need to contact, many of their websites contain information on proper usage for groups such as yourself.  You could probably print those instructions off and show them to the administration for permission to use them.

  2. I compose music so I know the way around this.  Just ask the artist directly.  Go to his/her site, email them, and by now EVERYONE has a Myspace music page....just hit them up letting them know your dilemma.  If you don't hear from them, though you should, try calling the company and seeing if you can do it.  As lons as you're not making a profit from playing the music, there shouldn't be an issue.  BUT make sure you get it from them in some form of documentation (email, mailed letter, electronic document) to protect the interests of your company.
