How do you get publicity for a blog?

Question

Lets say I want to write articles on nutrition & fitness but I don't just want to sit here and write wasting my time if nobody is going to read it other than me and maybe a few friends. I'd like my writing to reach the masses. How can this be accomplished? Thanks.
