You reach down into the pocket and pick it up. Unless there's a ball return, then you look at the end of the table.

Cue ball is slightly smaller in diameter than the other balls.  While the other balls are "trapped" once they fall into the pockets, the cue ball rolls freely to the return where you can retrieve it.
