How do you get rid of a family of snakes under/near my house without an expert?

I saw a snake near my house and I believe that there might be a family, so I'm wondering if there is anyway to get rid of them without calling an expert, so that I don't have to waste all the money and inconvenience.

strt a small safe bonfire the smoke will run em out or beat ground then when they run out use both methods etc hit them with sharp axes we had the same in morocco in casablanca it sure worked for us

I had the same problem, they stayed away after I threw mothballs under the house.

some people use sulfur to keep snakes away but others say it doesn't work, but its worth a try.

Snakes don't exactly have "families."  

What kind of snakes are they?  If they're small enough, and non-poisonous enough, a cat could probably do it.

Get a package of  glue boards they work well for snakes.  I bought mine at Walmart had picture of snake on package.  Place close to perimeter walls.
