I noticed bag worms on my neighbors tree and then turned around and saw the cocoons on mine as well. I think they need to be sprayed with something but what is it?

  1. You may find information of the Internet easier than on answers.  I just searched bag worms.

  2. We do a few things, depending on the stage.  When they are in their bags, go in the daytime and break up the bag with a stick.  Smush all the worms that you can, but some will get away, you just have to go back and do it again the next day, or when you again see a bag.  After the bag stage they form white fuzzy cocoons.  Smash all those that you can find.  In the winter, through early spring, they are in hard brown shiny cocoons, on the branches of the tree.  These can be picked off, we just break off the small branch they are on and bring it in and burn it.  It seems like alot, but you can keep a handle on them and keep them from damaging your trees.  As far as I know there is no spray for them, and even if there were, poison does more damage than benefit.

  3. If your infestation is mild, you can pick off the tents in the late fall, winter, or early in the spring.

This is when the eggs are inside the cocoons.

By mid spring, the eggs begin to hatch and the infestation will continue if you have not gotten rid of them.

They spend the spring and summer with their cocoon attached to their backside and the males will come out to seek females who will mate with them and lay their eggs by early fall.

Burning the egg filled cocoons in a controlled burn will solve the infestation problem, though some states and localities have ordinances against this.

Check with your local Department of Agriculture office for disposal recommendations and legal pesticides to deal with larger infestations.
