  1. sorry it sort of a generic question ...would need to know what species you are calling red ants

very tiny pale red would be pharoah ants living in the walls od the home...need a protein based bait, spraying for them makes them worse

small dark red ants could be several species that usually using a sugar based bait like Terro works well, but at times they will feed mainly on proteins, Combat brand baits

very large ants, they will be carpenter ants, there are a couple of professional baits that target them, and you can find them over the web, Using common baits  found at grocery/ hardware stores will be hit and miss

you will probably get suggestions on spreading boric acid or borax around...unsightly and you will probably actually just be moving them to another place rather than getting rid of them. Borates placed outside will act as a long term herbicide killing landscape plants....another thing you will see is placing grits around...ants do not eat solid foods, so they can't eat the grits, drink water then blow up

  2. Don't know what country you are in... but in Australia, we have stuff called Dead-Ant. It's like poisonous sticky honey in a tube that you lay about where they get about. The ants take it back to the nest, and it poisons the colony. Not sure it would be ideal for your 4 year old to be near it though... and pretty sure it's not natural. But doesn't take long to work, so would only have to be used for as long as it took to get no more ants.
