How do you get rid of red tape?

  1. Wow, sweet metaphor! At least I hope that's what you mean. If not, the rest of this isn't going to make any sense...

    "Red tape" is commonly caused by bureaucracies applying one set of rules to a very large amount of people. It refers to the amount of time and paperwork that people have to go through to get things done within a company or government. It's the bureaucracy's legal responsibility to provide some sort of approval process or paper trail, but there are ways of reducing the hassle if the higher-ups are willing.

    A bureaucracy can get rid of some red tape by departmentalizing its functions and shrinking the ratio of workers to consumers. That way, each consumer is more likely to receive individual attention and be perceived as an actual person. Also, companies need to  figure out ways to make exceptions to meet individual needs. One set of rules is not going to generalize to the entire population.

    The problem with this is that the red tape within the company to make these changes is even longer than that which the consumers experience, especially in government. So most of the higher-ups are going to maintain the status quo, oblivious to the consumers' complaints.
