Along with aloe vera, put some plain yogurt on your skin.  It has exfoliating AND soothing properties...it will also give a temporary cooling sensation.

yes, of course use aloe gel. but this is what makes mine go away in one night:

i get in the bath tub and turn the water as hot as i can stand it. then as i get used to the water temperature, i make it hotter and hotter until it;s as hot as it will go. then i soak for a while, making sure i let some water out and draw mor ehot water so the water doesn't cool down too much. soon, the redness and soreness will be gone! =]

Fresh aloe vera gel straight from the plant is best but,even the bottled kind at the drug store works well.
