How do you get rid of the smell of beer from the cap?

I'm working on a project I felt like doing in my spare time that uses bottle caps. I have friends who work at restraunts and said they can easily get their hands on bottlecaps for me so i asked them for it. However the smell of beer lingers and I detest it. How do i get rid of the smell and wont at the same time ruin the metal or anything?

Don't bother trying to clean them. Buy new (unused) bottle caps. They're dirt cheap. You can buy them at any home brewing supply store. Try http://www.midwestsupplies.com

A minor can purchase supplies from a home-brewing supply store - no laws against buying bottle caps. Exposing used caps to water and air will cause them to oxidize.
