  1. It wasn't a save situation.  A save is only recorded a pitcher pitches the 9th inning and their team has a three run lead or less.

  2. I'm not sure what you mean, I didn't see the game, but it must not have been a save situation. Just because he is the closer does not mean that he pitches exclusively in save situations.

This should help though. It is MLB official rules regarding saves.

    Saves:

Rule 10.20 in the Official Rule Book states:

Credit a pitcher with a save when he meets all three of the following conditions:

    (1) He is the finishing pitcher in a game won by his club; and

    (2) He is not the winning pitcher; and

    (3) He qualifies under one of the following conditions:

    - (a) He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning; or

    - (b) He enters the game, regardless of the count, with the potential tying run either on base, or at bat, or on deck (that is, the potential tying run is either already on base or is one of the first two batsmen he faces; or

    - (c) He pitches effectively for at least three innings. No more than one save may be credited in each game

  3. Simple. You get a save if you get you're team to win the game when the opposing team has the tying run at the plate or on-deck. For example.

No one on base, 2 run lead=save

    1 man on base, 3 run lead=save

    2 man on base, 4 run lead=save

    bases loaded, 5 run lead=save

  4. ok, i didnt see this, but if he pitched and noone hit.....???

how could he pitch if no one hit?

sorry, your question confuses me. how can someone pitch if no one hits??

  5. you have to have the lead  and u have to come in atleast the start of the 9th inning outta the bullpin. not start the game

wood gets the win not a save

  6. The leading team team must be leading by 3 or less runs

  7. In order to get a save the tying run must be on deck. However, if the pitcher allows the tying run come into play he will not be credited with the save. For example, the Yankees are up by 5 runs and Mariano Rivera comes in to get some work in in the 9th. He gets the first guy out, then walks the bases loaded then gets the next guy to ground into a double play to end the game. In this scenerio with the bases loaded, the batter on deck now represents the potential tying run but because Rivera put himself into that position he does not qualify for the save.

Also, you can get the save no matter how many runs your team is up as long as you satisfy 2 criteria: A)You pitch at least 3 innings or B) When you came into the game being up by 3 or less runs with more than an inning to pitch and your team scores more runs but since you came in with a save situation you still get the save. Now, in Wood's case, the Cubs were up by 9 at that point so it wasn't a save situation. Hope that helps.
