How do you get the In-State Tuition of a certain college. In other words How many years do you have to live in a certain state to qualify for the Instate price reduction.

  1. Ranto is right that each state has its own rules, and in most states, it takes from one to three years to establish residency.  You also usually have to prove that you didn't move to the state just to go to college (Ranto's situation was unusual) - in other words, you can't go somewhere, start school, and then after a year or two declare that you are a resident.  However, if you go there, work for a year or so, and then apply for school, you can be a resident as long as your parents aren't claiming you as a deduction on their income taxes in some other state.


  2. It depends on the state.  In some states, you have to live in the state for one year prior to matriculating.  

    In others, you can establish residency after starting school.  In California, for example, you can claim residency after one year.  You need to prove financial independence if your parents live in another state.  You also need to prove that you remained in California during school breaks.
