  1. Antenna and position in the building are the two things that most affect reception beyond the uncontrollable (like your receiver and the distance/strength of the station you want to listen to).

    Make sure you've got the antenna extended about 1/4 of the total length, then move the radio and antenna around (most antennas are swivel-type). Now move the antenna out further and see if the signal gets better or worse. Experiment with various lengths and positions in the house/room. Make sure you step away from the radio each time as your body will affect the reception (true!).

    When you find the right combination - you're there. And don't forget to fine-tune the dial as it can shift slightly.

    If there's no built-in antenna, look on the back or side of the radio for a small set-s***w. Get a loop antenna at Radio Shack or just attach a long piece of wire to it.

    Almost anything metal will act as an antenna. You really need one for the best reception.
