How do you get the caps on Super Mario 64 on Nintendo 64?

Me and my brother have been trying to find the caps forever and we cant find them! Help!

Well the flying cap is in the first room when you enter the castle.When you have enough stars there will be a light that appears.Look up into it and you be teleported into an area, fly to the middle and hit the switch.The metal cap is in the one level where you jump into the werid black stuf to get into.Well anyways in that area with the sea monster there is a red gate thing you can jump on,go into the dor on it nd the metal switch is in there. i used to play it when i was a kid and i think you just unlock them as you play the game and then the cap boxes appear
