Question:

How do you get the county to put up a no-parking sign in an area where parking is already illegal?

I live on a very narrow street in the suburbs. When people park across the street from my driveway it is difficult to back out, especially during the winter. Also, the driveway is 15 feet from a stop sign, so it is illegal for these people to be parking there anyway (according to state driving laws you must not park within 30 feet of a stop sign). But there is not a no-parking sign and no one ever seems to get ticketed. I live outside city limits so our local government is at the county level. I want the county to put up a no-parking sign to remind people to park farther away from the stop sign. How do I accomplish this?

  1. I would recommend starting with a letter to the city council outlining the problem.  If the street is within the city limits, then the city is in charge of erecting signs.  If it happens to be a state route, then the state dept. of Transportation (DOT) would be the one to contact.  Being a narrow street, it is probably a city owned and maintained street.

You may also contact the police department whenever there is a violation and report it.  Perhaps if the perpetrators see more tickets and police in the area, they will mend their ways.

  2. Call your county commissioner and complain. Also call your city council member. They are usually very helpful.

  3. call your department of transportation, or sheriff's dept.  thats what i did

  4. speak to your locall council and they will probably sort it out.

  5. Jessica's answer is great, I just want to add that I would call the tow truck on everybody that parked there.

  6. I would think that if you contact your Council Man  and  the County Sheriffs office, and the County Executive, And requested  it, you might get one.. It depends  on how much money your county Highway Dept. has  in its budget  for signs..  It costs money  to set the pole  and  the sign, not to mention  the cost  of  the pole  and  the sign themselves.. and they may  or may not have a No Parking sign  to spare.  All you  can do  is  ask.
