I have a new roommate in my dorm room. She is an amazing girl who does not smoke. I have a feeling though that her parents smoked in the house she just moved from and her clothes smell awful! I walked into our room yesterday and immediately felt nauseated. I sprayed Febreeze on her clothes as a temporary solution but now my cloths are starting to pick up the scent. I am sure in a month or two the smell will probably dissipate after s few loads of laundry in our smoke free environment, but what to do until then? Our whole closet is disgusting now.

  1. You need to get fresh air into the room.  Opening the windows, and the closet door will help to dissipate the smell.  If possible hang her clothes outside of the closet, near to the window.  The smell will be made worse and last longer, if they are "cooped up" in the closet.

Otherwise, offer to help with her laundry!

  2. All her clothes have to be laundered twice; wash, dry, wash, dry. Make sure she uses NO dryer sheets or any kind of softener - dryer sheets deposit a layer of wax on clothing that lock in odors.

By the way, Febreeze does not clean anything: it is just cheap, cheap, cheap nasty perfume and is much more allergenic than smoke. Throw it out and do everyone in your dorm a favour - Febreeze is the most allergenic product on record to date. Horrible c**p.

  3. just spill stuff on her clothes so she has to wash them more often.

    Lol

  4. Ask her to wash her clothes. Be honest and tell her that the smell is making you sick. I can't stand the smell of old cigarette smoke, either.

When she does her laundry, she should add a cup of Ammonia to the wash cycle. That will help take the smell out. Ammonia is cheap, you can get it at the grocery store.

  5. A steam gun is the best solution, shooting steam from your steam iron might help.

Put on hangers and take in the bathroom when having a bath or shower.

Hang lavender bags in your wardrobe.

  6. Go to the store and buy a box of baking soda.  Open it up and set it in the back of the closet but allow for air flow.  It will absorb up odors, not just smoke odors, but musty tennis shoes and plastics.  You can get two boxes and put one in your closet and one in her closet.  You can tell her that is what you were taught from your family to control closet odors.  Tell her that you do not want to offend her with your smells and you are sure that she does not want to offend you with hers.  Make it a casual thing and it will be just fine.  Trust me this will work.

  7. To remove the smell of cigarette smoke wash clothes in one cup of White Vinegar full cycle and at the hottest  temperature the clothes can handle

To remove the smell of smoke in the closet place a dish of White Vinegar in the closet for several hours or overnight then remove the bowl and air out the room with open windows repeat steps if necessary if odor has not dissipated, you can then place a container of Baking Soda and Cat Litter in the closet and replace about every three months, keep baking soda stirred every few weeks to refresh the baking soda Good Luck !

  8. FEBREEEEEZE! works like a champ for any cloth freshner purposes! :)

  9. get over it and stuff fabric sofner sheets in the closet and in pockets of the clothes
