I don't want to actually do any equations, I just want to know how you can display the symbols as I want to show an equation in a report.

  1. go to START>ALL PROGRAMS>ACCESSORIES>SYSTEM TOOLS>CHARACTER MAP

Look for the symbol you want and copy it.

You can also look at the keyboard strokes to get the character. For example to get the euro symbol € you will find in Verdana as "alt 0128". Remember the numbers to use are on the numeric keypad not above the letters at the top of the keyboard

  2. Assuming you use Excel 2003.

Open an excel sheet. Go to "Insert" then "Object" and then choose "Microsoft Equation 3.0"

  3. It is easier to do this in Word, using the Equation Editor.

But if you absolutely need to insert symbols in Excel, simply to into Word, insert the symbol there (not by using Equation Editor, but by using the Insert menu, then select "symbol").  Now highlight the symbol you want, then to into Excel and paste it.  Not all symbols will work this way, but many will.
