There is no exact formula that any user knows for sure.

Bottom line is that the TC badge isn't permanent. You have to answer questions continually in a category to have a CHANCE of keeping it or gaining one. The chance depends on other users' performances in the category as well (and whatever other factors that Yahoo has hidden up its sleeve or software). You can be TC in an obscure category that has few questions...the factors are variable, so that's why there's no exact formula known by an user for sure. Answering questions helps; earning best answers helps; being active in specific categories helps; and outperforming others helps.

To be a top contributor you need to be knowledgeable in up to three category's. the exact formula is kept secret by yahoo but the common theory is that you need a minimum of 10 percent best answers in each particular  category and is said to be reviewed weekly. the top contributor badge is not permanent and can be removed at any time.So choose the category's you feel you can get best answer and research every detail you can find with links to add to the answer and do not answer questions you don't think you can get you best answer (it will lower your percentage of best answers).

You have to answer alot of questions in the same category day after day and have a high percentage of best answers (not too high, mine was only 18%). I had it for "Business and Finance" and then I spent a few days answering questions in Music so I lost it. Its not worth even trying to get because if you dont come to YA for a week or on vacation, youll lose it. Its ridiculous.
