  1. Driving there would be the simplest choice, but I believe there are tourbuses that travel there from Munich and other regional places in southern Bavaria.  It's one of the most-visited places in Germany, so it can't be THAT hard to find.

  2. Easy:

    It's mostly Autobahn.

Choose a rainy day if you can; it will be less crowded.

  3. If you do not have a car, you can take the train to Fuessen and then go by bus.

Go to http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en... and search for connections from Muenchen Hbf to Hohenschwangau. Travel time is 2 hrs 30 min one-way.

Note that Neuschwanstein is a world-class tourist trap, though. You would be much better off visiting more authentic palaces and castles with some real history, not this 19th century wanna-be historical wedding cake monstrosity. Places I like are Salzburg, Sansoussi in Potsdam, Veste Oberhaus in Passau, Cesky Krumlov, Munich residency, St. Emmeram in Regensburg, Koenigsstein near Dresden and Quedlinburg.

Considering your travel plans, I think that St. Emmeram would be best. It is only 1hr 30 min by train from Munich to Regensburg. The family who has been owning this castle for centuries is still living there.

  4. HI,

getting there is easy. I would recommend a train from Munich Hauptbahnhof.

If you like tours, you can also take a tour bus.

But I disagree with t_maia. Neuschwanstein is a wonderful place to go. The castle has so much mystical atmosphere. I love going there.

Best is to plan a full day. Then you can visit the two castles: Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. Don't miss the walk up into the mountains. There is a bridge from where you have the splendid view onto the castle (this bridge is the exact place where all the famous photos from the castle are taken).

Make a short walk around the nearby lake, relax, enjoy the atmosphere. Afterwards go to Fuessen, a nearby town, eat the great Bavarian cuisine, and do some nice shopping. It'll be one of the ever-lasting experiences of you vacation here.
