How do you get to become a rally car driver?

i understand that driving go karts and other formula cars can lead to eventually driving formula 1 cars but i have never understood how you can end up in a career in rally car driving, does anyone know?

Taking part in europian or wold go-karts races you might be given a contact for a greater tournouament like renault formula or gp2 and from then if you have good appearances then you may attract the interesting of a formula 1 team and get hired.
