  2. To add to Thrash's answer, start by taking the subway to Penn Station in Manhattan.

    At Penn Station, you get on one of Amtrak's "Empire Service" trains, which go between Penn Station and Buffalo, via way of Albany and Syracuse.  There are about four trains each day.  The trip takes about 8 hours, and a one-way ticket costs about $78.

    Tickets need to be reserved in advance.  The easiest way to do so is on Amtrak's website:

    Note that the Amtrak trains to Buffalo also pick up passengers in Yonkers, if that's more convenient for you than Penn Station in Manhattan.
