bus from the airport to the station, then a train to central Milan, took about an hour, if that if I remember rightly

You have to take the train in Bergamo (the train station is "bergamo stazione centrale) and you arrive at the Milan Central Station in less than 30 minutes!

There is a bus costing 7 euro (or 12 euro return) that leaves you to Milan Centrale station - Piazza Luigi di Savoia.
