I am visiting Rome next week and am staying near the Colosseum. Using public transport, how do I get to the Vatican City from the Colosseum? There doesn't appear to be a Metro station nearby, nor does there appear to be a bus route near the Colosseum...?!

  1. I agree with Chicken. When I'm in Rome, I usually walk. Public transit is okay if you're in a hurry, but you miss a lot. There is a metro stop right across the street from the Colosseum, but there isn't a direct connection to St Peter's. Someone has already given you the public transit info. There is another bus option though - the hop-on, hop-off tour bus.  http://www.rexervation.com/romeopentour.... http://www.romeguide.it/romeopentour/rom... If you do that, you don't have to transfer anywhere. St Peter's is the third stop from the Colosseum.

I don't take the most direct route between the Colosseum and Rome. Sometimes I go to the Circus Maximus and follow the road around to the Mouth of Truth or other times just go through the forum and Capitoline Hill to the Il Vittoriano and stop to admire Trajan's column. Then stop in at Santa Maria Sopra Minerva and the Pantheon (my favorite building in Rome). Then on to Piazza Navonna before continuing on to St Peter's...and I always make it a point to cross the river at the Ponte sant'Angelo in part to see Bernini's angels, but there are also pretty good street artists there sometimes.

  2. I suggest that you buy yourself some good quality walking shoes and a detailed map of Rome. We stayed near the Pantheon and walked to all the landmarks. Buses are fine if you need to keep to a tight schedule. Walking is a fantastic way to really see the city, discover little piazzas and wonderful pizzas, you can hear the choir practising in the basilicas, and look in courtyards of the buildings.

If you want to visit the Vatican museums, it would be a good idea to arrive before opening time or you could well spend half the day lining up in the street.

  3. everything in rome is sooo accessible, we went there in april and we basically walked everywhere! we stayed right near the colesseum too. if you have a map handy it helps - basically walk it to the termini station. then get on the line 'a' to ottavia i think? and from there you just walk straight down the road and you've reached the Vatican city! it's amazing! it's best to get the metro there first then ifyou have time, walk it back towards the colesseum (use the map or you'll get  lost!) it really is sooo nice if you walk around, you get a taste of the real Italy that way!

think by metro it's only a few minutes, walking it will probably be 20-30 mins?

    enjoy your time there!

  4. you can walk everywhere...but there is also a tourist bus w/ on-off anywhere service.  it has many stops at all the famous places so you get off where you want & on again at any marked stop...

  5. From Colosseo you take the subway b line until the Termini station, there you change and take the a line until "Cipro musei vaticani" or "ottaviano san pietro".

By bus instead you take from Colosseo bus number 60 until piazza venezia, and from there bus 64 to the Vatican city.
