How do you get video MPEG files from a Sony camcorder to the mac?

Either connect the hard drive or flash memory based camcorder with a USB cable and copy the files over to the Mac.

If this does not work, take the memory card out of the camcorder and use a card reader.

That is not the issue - but this is... The MPEG 2 files cannot be used directly by iMovie or Final Cut. Go to Apple.com, click on Downloads, search for "StreamClip". Download and install (free) StreamClip. Open the copied files with StreamClip; Export the video as .mov or .mp4 then drag into the iMove clips pane or the TimeLine.
