How do you get wedding cakes to look so smooth?

It isnt frosted with frosting. They use this stuff called Fondant that looks like playdough. They can color it into  whatever color they want and mold it and roll it out. It tastes REALLY good, too!

its fondont.  its like this "putty" thats made of sugar and they can roll it out thin and put it over the cake so its smooth.  thats how they make it look like it has draping on it too sometimes.  it can take almost any shape.  so they can cut strips of it and paint it and make stipes and stuff like in your picture (its just cake - fondont - more fondont- and some hand painting for the details)

They make the icing professionally and it is elastic-like ball that they roll out with a rolling pin so it is perfectly smooth, then put around the cake....Watch the show on the food network and you can see. I forget the name.

it's called fondant.  below is a link to how to make it.  usually makes cakes look really good, but not taste to good (personal preference, as i HATE frosting, even moreso when it's thick)
