my baby girl is almost a year old. she will be in 2 weeks. i have tried over and over again everyday to get her to drink out of a sippy cup and she won't do it. all she does is bite the end of it or shake it and keep crying because she's thirsty but won't drink out of it. i am getting frustrated and also, she is getting to be a picky eater. she still won't eat table foods or gerber third foods. she will only eat gerber 2nd foods and only a few of them. she only wants her formula alot of times and don't want any foods. do you have any suggestions or have you been in this situation?

  1. I'll suggest that you do what I did with my son when he was about 11 months old (he is now 22 months old).

When I decided to switch to a sippy cup, I just gave him that and only that.  I did not give in and give him a bottle.  I think I actually threw the few bottles we had away so that I couldn't give him one.

The first day he cried a bit but eventually took it.  It only took a couple of days and then he was ok.

Too many people make it a huge drawn out thing and they really don't need to.

    good luck!

  2. My son was a preemie and I had a hard time getting him to use a sippy cup. I found the Nuby brand bottles with the silicone nipple that is shaped like a sippy cup spout. Within a month he was using regular sippy cups.

As for being a picky eater, just keep offering new foods. You can start transitioning her to whole milk by mixing her formula 1/2 & 1/2. Mix the formula like normal but add enough milk to make the amount she usually does. Gradually decrease the amount until it is all milk. She will eat when she is hungry. Trying to force a child a eat when they are not really hungry can cause them to overeat and become obese.

  3. Thats exactly what my daughter did.  Try a different sippy cup.  I thought the rubber ones would be an easier transition but all she did was chew on them and make a huge mess.  As far as being a picky eater hang in there, I've tried every trick in the book, but eventaully they get older and you can negotiate. I still buy pediasure or those other nutrition (walmart brand) drinks to try and compensate for her lack of interest in food.  And she gets a mulit.

  4. My baby had the same prob.  Ijust gave him a real cup (small enough to wrap his hand around) and let him figure it out.  It was messy at first, but i stuck to it and even taught him how to go get a rag and clean up his mess and put his cup on a table when he was done.  Now his 5 yr old cousin "cant drink out of a big boy cup" and my 1 yr old son can.
