How do you get your car to the garage for its MOT once the tax has run out?

It seems like a Catch 22: you can't take a car on the road without road tax, but you can't renew your tax disc without a valid MOT!

What is the legal way round this please?

  1. Pre-book the MoT, and you can then drive there and back legally.

  2. Providing that you are going to a booked MOT appointment, and your car is insured, you may drive it on the road. Obviously this must be by a direct route to a local garage.

  3. You are allowed to drive there legally but only for a pre booked appointment

It goes without saying that you have to take the most direct route.

  4. you have to stay on top of it and not let either expire

  5. Pre-book the mot

Make sure the insurance is good

Drive straight there and back after

Tax it ASAP - it's good to do all this for the first of the month as the tax is backdated to then. If you have missed a months tax watch out for a letter from DVLA as you might have failed to declare SORN

  6. Get the garage to collect it with trade plates on.  It will probably cost you extra though.

  7. you can drive to an mot with neather but nowhere else.

  8. Easy!!

Just book the MOT with the garage and give them your registration, and you will be legally able to drive to the MOT station without tax just as long as you are insured for the car.

  9. easy let the dvla know what you are going to do that you are takeing it to a garage and its getting an mot then you are going to get your mot . you must of got a letter through the post about 2 weeks before your tax ran out to remind you to get your tax tut tut . yeah just let the dvla know they might send you out a valid cover note for a day or just give you permission and they will let the police now what you are doing . but i would be worryed if i was you , you might have a fine in the post cos you havent taxed it or let them now if its road worthy or not  i would phone them asap and let them now good luck

  10. You can drive too and from a PRE-ARRANGED place of Test without either a Vehicle Excise Licence (VEL) or a current MOT certificate. You must however, be Insured in respect of Third Party Liability and hold a current driving licence for that class of vehicle. A point worth mentioning, you cannot stop off at a friends house or call at the shops to do your weekly shop. In other words, you must go too and from the Test Centre in pretty much the most direct route.I think, if, say you lived in Leeds and had an MOT booked in Coventry you would be abusing the provisions and would leave yourself open to prosecution.
