I am in a peer tutoring class in high school and I am working on a paper on how to get your child into a Special Ed(FMD) class in the school. So, I was wondering if anyone knows how that is done because I have researched and can't find any information on this type of thing? Plus, the peer tutoring teacher won't tell me where to get the information.

  1. Kentucky is no different then another state. All states in the America follow the mandated laws of IDEA which stands for Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.

I suggest you look the law up  and under the Evaluation, Eligibility, and IEP placement you will find your answer.

Also check out the Kentucky Department of Education website I sure you will find information there.

  2. In order for a child to get in special ed, the school and the parents have to follow the laws that govern this.

The law is called IDEA 'individuals with disabilities education act' and it is a FEDERAL law.

THis law mandates a specific step by step process that schools and parents must follow in order for a child to qualify for special ed.

This law is for ALL public schools in the country. Each state is allowed to use some of the laws to their own situation, but they CAN NOT be more restrictive than the federal IDEA law.

This is a VERY confusing and LONG process. It is also very CORRUPT. Schools are VERY corrupt with special ed and most parents don't know it.

  3. I can't tell you specifically about Kentucky, but I had a son in Special Ed.  It starts with going to the school and saying you have a child with some difficulty.  They then schedule an assessment by the psychologists or other professionals who work with the school system.  They write up a report which the school administration uses to assign placement of the child- hopefully to an appropriate special ed class.  Go to a school principal or administrator in the Special Ed Department of the school system you are affiliated with.  They will know the process.
