  1. Put the dog out or in another room with the door closed.

Feeding the dog table scraps is not healthy for the dog.

  2. Sternly say "NO!" each time he/she does it and eventually it will stop.

  3. We try to feed our dog right before we eat and she usually sleeps during dinner. We sometimes give her a bone to munch on while we eat to keep her occupied.

  4. give him his diner while you eat yours.

    put him outside/another room.

give him a toy that he likes alot & he should be content

  5. Hot Sauce

  6. Absolutely ignore the dog.  If he looks at you with begging eyes, ignore him.  If he barks, smack his nose and go back to ignoring him.

Remember, NO EYE CONTACT with the dog, this will only encourage him.

You need to make him know that you are in charge.  Ignore him until you are ready to initiate contact.  If he jumps up on you, strike him.

Put food in his bowl, and then wait (ignoringhim) with it in your hand, staring away at something, for 30 seconds, then put it down and tell him to eat.  This will help you establish control.

He is a dog, you are the human.  If he doesn't worship you as the head of the pack, he doesn't get food.

Oh, and no breaking any of these rules.  It makes it 20 times harder to train him out of it if he gets treats at the table while you are eating.

  7. Well you got them started when they were younger I assume. Whenever you bring a new dog into your home, never feed them scraps from the table to begin with, and then they will never know what they are missing. Just ignore your dog and dont even react to him/her and eventually it will realize its pouting and panting aren't getting your attention anymore.

  8. It's hard to break them of the habit, but you have to quit giving them scraps off the table. Eventually they may get the idea they aren't getting any more.

It's best not to get them started in the first place.

Our golden retriever is so bad he'll pull out one of the chairs at our table and sit in it until he gets left over spaghetti.

  9. Since you find this a problem, remove the dog from the dining area during meals.  You may find that giving the dog 'treats' in the kitchen or even outside during BBQ's you have encouraged the habit & he doesn't care which room he is in & loves to be with the family.  Follow a good diet for the pet & ensure he eats in a timely manner.  You will find that even though you are taking care of the dog's diet he will react like people when a couple of hours after dinner you feel like a tasty snack.  You probably don't need it but you want that little extra sweet or salty flavour.

Personally, when my children were younger and dropped food everywhere while learning to eat our dogs not only cleaned up the droppings they waited to see if there were more to come.  Dogs are social animals and enjoy the company the same way a lot of us do.  We didn't dicipline them at that time but we never fed them from the table either.  They are smart and know who to go to.

  10. You never sh old have tolerated it from the start.

    Now it's hooked.

    Will

  11. I was having the same problem and consulted with a dog trainer.  Their advice to me was this.

Place a hook of some sort in the wall away from the table, and tie the dog up before you sit down to each meal.  If you can do this in the area where your dogs food and water dish are its even better as they will associate this area with the only area where they are allowed to eat.  Also, do not feed the animal table scraps, or at the least table scraps from your hand, only place them in his/her bowl after you have finished your meal.  Or you could try putting the dog in another room, but that won't correct the problem only mask it.

  12. ignore the begging, dont even look at them. or put them in another room while you are eating, out of sight out of mind.

  13. Ignore the dog if you can.  Don't even make eye contact.  If that doesn't work after a few days, put him outside or in another room during dinner.
