How do you get your kids to remember to turn the lights off?

I have 4 kids, 3 of which are old enough to make an effort to remember to turn lights off and close doors when leaving a room. Does anyone have a suggestion to get them to remember to do this?

Also what do you think are appropriate bedtimes for 4, 7, and 10 year old kids?

  1. A good bedtime for them would probably be around 8:30

And if they dont turn the lights off or close the door, tell them that they get one of their toys (or something that they like to do) taken away for 2days, or some disciplinary action like that. Taking things away always works with younger kids. Or you could say ' If you forget to turn the light off or close the door, then you can't have dessert tonight.' Something like that. Or no TV. Something that they really like to do.

And about the bedtime thing, whatever you do, Don't give them different bed times until they're older. They're will be a lot of rebellion from the younger kids, because they'll cry because big brother doesn't have to go to bed until 10, while they have to be to bed by 8:30 or something like that. You should give them different bedtimes when there all at least 12 or 13. Then the most you'll get out of them is an 'Awww, Mommmmm'. But they'll probably just stay in their rooms and watch tv anyways lol. Which gets into the subject of Parental Control. lol

    Hope this helped

  2. just slap them when they forget and 9 would be a good time for them

  3. a spanking will help them remember

  4. Try this

Write "Turn off the lights" on a piece of paper

Then tape it to the back/front of the door, where they will see it when they are leaving the room.

  5. For our kids, turning off the light has been a thing we have done since birth. However, when it got to the point where they didn't remember much, we would charge them a penny a light.  They only get a dollar a week though.  For older kids, I would charge a quarter a light.

Our children (8, 6, and 4) go to bed at 7pm whether it is a school night or a weekend night.  However, we have done that forever.  My 8 year old is asking for a later time.  When she shows that she is more mature and less cranky with less sleep, I will let her stay up an extra half hour.  I think this depends on the child.  If the child seems mature (does what they are told, keeps up on chores, etc) and can miss an extra half hour of sleep, I would let them stay up a little later.  If the child is lazy, bratty, or immature I would set them a for around 7 for the 4yr old, 8 for the 7yr old, and 9 for the 10yr old.  However, if they are cranky in the morning, move their bed time back a half hour.  I was allowed to stay up to 8 when I was in elementary school, 9 when I was in middle school, and 10 when I was in high school

  6. Tell the kids that they need to turn off lights because you need to save money, and the more money you have, the more you can go out to fun places and eat out.......Tell them that the house looks better when doors are closed...idk............

A 4 year old should go to sleep at 8:30.

A 7 year old should go to sleep at 9.

A 10 year old should go to sleep at 9:30.

  7. Maybe try some discipline?
