How do you get your motorcycle licence?

Not quite sure of the options I can take on obtaining a motorcycle license. I'm 19 and I have a valid driver's licence.

Do I have to take a permit test and then a road test to have one?

What else do you need?

  1. you will need to go to the DMV and obtain a road rules handbook. In it are valueable tips and information for safe riding.

You will need to write an examination and then upon passing, you will be granted a learner's permit to ride on the streets. There will be a lot of restrictions of course. Once you have ridden for the minimum amount of time designated on the learner's permit, you can do a road test and upon successful passing, you will be granted your full license.

Depending on your state, the laws may be a little bit different.

There are motorcycle schools which coach and teach you good and safe riding tips. They provide motorcycles to practice on too.

  2. DMV

  3. It varies by the state you live in, for example here in Idaho, you would have to do this:

Under Idaho DMV guidelines, anyone who drives a motorcycle must have a Class M motorcycle license or motorcycle instruction permit.

Any person who applies for a motorcycle endorsement after September 1, 1998 will be required to pass both a written knowledge test and motorcycle skills test*. Any person under 21 will be required to take a written knowledge test and successfully complete a motorcycle rider-training course. It is a good idea to take this course even if you are over 21.

Google "getting a motorcycle license in (insert your state)".  That will get you a link to your state's requirements.

    Hope this helps!
