I am 27 and was adopted by my stepfather when I was 4. I am no longer a part of his life but my real dad and i are close now. I wanted to get him put back on my birth certificate for his birthday. Anyone know how to go about this if I don't have a lot of money for a lawyer?

  1. as far as i know, you can't unless you go to court and have him re-adopt you as an adult.  and i think the rules may be idfferent in different areas for adult adoption.

THIS is why i repeatedly tell people to be careful when having their young kids adopted by a new spouse.

  2. You should be able to go to the courthouse, and get your natural dad to re-adopt you.

Also, is it so much a need to have it done on paperwork, or just in your heart?  You know who he is, and legally, by just making a power of attorney, you can have all rights that a child/father share by placing your wills, power of attorney if something ever happened, etc, into place.  The love in your heart counts more than anything.

  3. Your adoptive father is your "real" father.  If your bio father is all that, why not have him pay for it.  Oh yeah, he's the one that didn't support you for your whole life.

  4. As with most laws, the laws regarding adult adoption vary from one state to another. Here's a link to find out what's possible in your state:

What are some of the reasons for an adult adoption?  One is an adult adoptee after finding his/her birth family may choose to be adopted by his/her family of origin. (according to this site)

You can legally change your name back to that of your father. However, this option doesn't provide a legally recognized relationship so that an adopted person can inherit from their parent.

Good luck! I hope this is helpful.

ETA: No one should assume that the thumbs down received are from the person who posted the question.

For those who wish to make judgments about the 1st father's motives for agreeing to the adoption, unless you know the whole story, you DON'T know his reasons.

  5. Have your real father sign an affidavit of paternity. Go to the local vital statistics office to get a form to change a birth certificate acknowledging that the original is wrong and  you wish to have it corrected. I am 24 and the spelling on mine was wrong and this was what I needed to do.

  6. Having your father adopt you would be the only way to do it. Check into local laws. My re-adoption is costing me about $50 for the court filing fees and that is all. No lawyer, just a form, a fee and a court date.

  7. The only way you can do this is to have your dad adopt you as an adult.  You do not need your adopted father's permission to do so.  There are some states that do not allow adult adoption, but the majority do and you don't need a lawyer to do so.

  8. why bother really? he allowed you to be legally adopted by your step dad probably so he would not have to pay child support--- i know my husband did this with his kids too.he doesn't want anything to do with them.he refuses to call them or visit them or even send a card his decision, probably cause hes not really their biological father either .he just played family for a little while with their mom.pathetic really.i hope for their sake they know they are better off without him.good luck to you! if it means so much to you just assume the name.that is why people have other names like   SAM aka Joe which means SAM is also known as Joe.good luck to you and your daddy!

  9. I was going to answer, but I see you're thumbs downing everyone.

Just because you don't like the answer and it's not convenient for you to accomplish on limited funds doesn't mean the answers are bad. We can't pull new laws out of thin air to please you.
