Question:

How do you give Pedialyte to a baby who has no desire to nurse, and isn't down with a bottle?

This question is a "just in case" question that I thought of last night when my baby had a fever. He had no appetite to nurse; he isn't good with bottles- when I bottle-fed him breastmilk in the past, he would gag and spit most of it out. I have introduced a sippy cup, but he mostly chews on it and throws it.

So, if he were to get sick again, and I had to give Pedialyte, how could I do so? With a medicine syringe? That sounds awful. Is there an easier way?

  1. A syringe or dropper would probably be your only option in that case.  Just a few drops at the time.  Not much fun, but a whole lot better than IV fluids!

  2. This might sound weird, but Pedialyte snow cones were a hit, here.

This past February, my daughter got hit with a wicked virus. Throwing up after eating or drinking anything, high fever...pretty much anything. She had only had 3 wet diapers in a 24 hour period, so I called the doctors office, who said that 3 was the minimum, and to really try to get some Pedialyte down her. She refused it in a cup, a bottle, looked at me like I was crazy when I acted like I was drinking it.

Finally, daddy threw some ice into the mixer, crushed it, and poured Pedialyte all over it. And she actually ate some of it....LOL.

However, have you ever tasted that stuff?? Blah...it tastes like koolaide with 2 cups of extra sugar in it...I wouldn't want to drink it, either....LOL

  3. If they have a sore throat, sometimes they'll take it as a popsicle.

A plain open cup, while a little messy, is enough of a novelty that some babies will drink from it.

  4. Click on the links, these kind of things

Walmart sells them or you can get them from walgreens or a pharmacy

This one is very easy to use it's like a pacifier but has an area to put the medicine or to put pedialyte

  5. I bet he would love a Pedialyte Pop!  lol  Try those if he is not interested in a bottle or cup.

BTW he is beautiful- All the best-

  6. Well I know its sounds awful. But its a syringe, OR IV. No easier way if they wont take a bottle. Sorry.

  7. Well you would more than likely be using expressed breastmilk not pedialyte. ( Breastmilk vs. Pedialyte  http://www.kellymom.com/health/illness/b...

But if they wouldn't breastfeed then your choices are:

    *Cup/paladai

    *sippy cup

    *bottle

    *dropper

    *spoon

    *momcicle

  8. We had something like this happen five months ago when my 23 month old ended up with rotovirus. Food/liquids made him sick and he refused to eat/drink, but the virus made him have horrible diarrhea. We ended up giving him a teaspoon at a time every 10 minutes (even at night). We could get him to take just the 1. When we took him to the hospital after 3 days of this, the doctors were surprised by how well hydrated he was. They also said that it was okay to use "G2" if a child won't take pedialyte. It taste better, gives the child the electrolytes they need and has only a small amount of sugar, plus it is a lot cheaper. That is what we use now when our children need electrolytes.
