You don't.  Love bites, or hickeys, are tacky and immature.  It's essentially saying that you are a sloppy kisser who doesn't know when to stop.

You should be able to nibble or gently bite on your boyfriend's neck or shoulder without leaving a bruise.  If done right, it's very sensual - if you go overboard, it leaves an embarassing bruise to explain to everyone who sees you.
