How do you go about looking for a plot? My family plot is full and in a very bad areas now.... so I don't think I would every want to be buried there. My mother is also unsure about where to go.... I really like the new town we are purchasing a home at but the area is very old and I am not sure how to start this process of looking? Do you go cemetery to cemetery yourself? Or do they have real estate type agents who can do several cemetery in the area for you?

Any advice would be great! Thanks!

  1. You contact the actual cemetery to buy the plot from them. If you can’t find the contact info on your own, call an area funeral home and they’ll have it.

  2. Contact the cemetery to find out what it sells plots for and file that information away. Then check your local paper for classified ads for people selling plots and compare prices.  You may find plots on eBay but probably not where you want.

  3. .    There are realty agents.  You can get a list at the Department of Real Estate online or by phone.  Or you visit the cemetary in the good areas.  But remember that the good areas could be "bad" areas in 50 years when you die.

  4. You go to the cemataries themselves.   You can buy the exactly plot you want now.     This is such a good idea, I just never get around to it, but I know I should do it.

  5. You go visit the cemeteries yourself, walk them, see the ambience.  You can buy the plat right there at cemetery, but look at several first.  You can also call them and find the costs, but nothing beats walking the places.

Is there another area in the family cemetery that is better kept up?  If the cemetery isn't being kept up, complaints should be made to the cemetery office and then to the state.  There are perpetual upkeep commitments and special rules for cemeteries.
