I'm refering to state-funded (I live in GA).

Where do you start, and when should you start looking?

  1. Follow Amber's advice. The next step might be to call Head Start. Then you can compare different programs.

  2. I would check out Head Start/Early Head Start programs in your area.  Eligibility depends upon income, but the program is federally-funded.  Often, people enrolled in HS/EHS classrooms have children who are also enrolled in child-care.  Some of these people receive state-funding for their child-care as well.

Also check with your area's school districts.  4K programming is increasingly being offered throughout my state (WI).  Many people are sending children to 4K and/or Head Start in my area.  Dual enrollment is an option.

Oh, one more thing, look in the phone book/online for an agency in your area that helps families connect to community resources.  You may be able to type 211 on your phone to get this.  This agency will help you to better understand what is available in your area and may also help you to connect with a local child care referral agency (who would be able to specifically tell you about your options).

  3. I would start looking now.. If you can not find a website that can tell you then just call your local elementary school or high school and they can give you a number I am sure... also you could try to call the school district... some school districts have these programs as well.

  4. I'm not sure about GA but for a general answer... call your local school district or even the Health Department in your County.  They should be able to tell you what state-funded programs there are.  As for when to start looking... as soon as possible :-)  Most state funded programs are focused on PreK/4 years old.  You'll want to get the paperwork before the school year that your child turns 4.
