How do you go about getting a turning lane put in?

who do you talk to? i have absolutally no idea how to petition for one to be put in. the road i have to turn onto to get home is off of a VERY busy road and it at a horrible angle. it has no turning/deceleration lane and needs one HORRIBLY..how do i go about getting my town to put one in??

You have to contact your Department of Transportation (DOT) and they will do the necessary research that is needed to determine if a turn lane is needed.

It is only going to happen if the people who live & work right there are willing to pay the taxes to pay for the safety improvement.  Because if they are not, you will have enormous opposition to your request.

Every city, county, township etc. has some kind of government agency that plans improvements for the community.  Sometimes it is called a planning commission.  You need to look at the structure of your local government to find out what is the name of that organization, and where they hold public hearings, and how people get on the agenda.

Typically there will be a parade of people stepping up to a microphone and making the case for something that needs to be done.  Each has limited time period, so as to get everyone requests heard, thus you need to prepare to give the best speech of your life.

Have photos of the intersection, showing traffic flow.  get statistics on the # accidents there, and how many could have been avoided with better designed intersection.  Have photos showing how much traffic backed up there, maybe even a movie.

Since you live in town, call your citys transportaion department and let them know about the situation. If your mayor has an action line or department, let them know. Find who your city counsler is and let them know. Go to a city hall meeting, get on the agenda and let them know. If none of this works let the state transportation department know. If none of that works call your state represenative.
