I have a recipe that calls for fresh ground ginger.

Well, we just bought fresh ginger (for a few different things)

and I need 1 tsp. of it ground.

What do I use to grind it?

  1. You can pound it with a hammer, baseball bat, grate it, or use a crucible.

  2. The best thing to use is a zester if you have one. If not a cheese grater will work almost as well, just use the finest one that you have. If none of those are an option, cut a chunk of about what you need and smash it with a chefs knife turned sideways (lay it flat on top of the chunk of ginger and hit with your hand), then chop it up as much as you can.

  3. Just grate it.  I use my cheese grater for the job.

  4. "Ground" ginger is a dried version of ginger that is sold pre-ground.

You can "grate" the fresh ginger and replace it for the ground ginger.  It will have a slightly sharper flavor, so you might not want to use quite as much.

  5. Just use a grater, I use this all the time when I want to use ginger.

  6. you use a cheese grater
