  1. Call an licensed electrican. If you insist on doing it yourself, call for a utility markout. You don't want to put the rod through a gas or electric line.

  2. call a licensed electrician. you are not going to want to be in that meter trim while it is hot, good way to get hurt. to get the meter pulled will take the power company. another thing is you don't want to drive the ground rod through the service wire.

  3. Building supply stores have the ground rod( copper clad) in an 8ft. length. using a sledge hammer drive it into the ground under the meter can, until only about 6in. is sticking up. ( don't cheat and cut it off). From the ground connection in the meter can a solid single strand 6gage copper wire must proceed through the breaker/fuse box, UNBROKEN through the ground bar there, out the bottom to the ground bar you drove into the ground. a special connector should come with the bar. Some codes require a shield for the wire from the box to the bar. The building supply store will advise you of local codes. Good Luck!!

  4. the code says to ground the meter by using two ground rods that are 10 ft long and drive them down into the ground near your meter. a connection is made from the ground rods to your meter.

  5. Going by what we do in habitat, we take a piece of rebar that's almost 10 ft long and drive it into the ground and attach the grounding wire to it.  Make sure you go by what your state requires.  Call inspections and permits and make sure you have the authority to do this.  You might have to have a licensed electrician do this job.
