  2. You need to hoe them to remove weeds, and as others have said pull the dirt up around the vines to keep the roots well under the dirt. If you haven't' t fertilize them before, then before heeling them, pour a little garden fertilizer in a line beside the potatoes. As you hoe and pull the dirt around the potatoes you can pull the fertilizer around the roots with it. You don't want any fertilizer on the leaves themselves. It will burn them. Often potatoes get red worms that will eat the leaves, we put seven dust on them to take care of this. Your potatoe vines will bloom and then start to wilt. When the vines start to die you can dig your potatoes. We usually dig them all summer as we need them. Then in early October we pick a dry day, dig them all up and let them dry good. Then we have a potatoe hole dug under our house. We put all the potatoes down in that hole, you can cover it with ply wood . The potatoes need to be next to the dirt, not plastic. Plastic will rot them. Good luck!!!!

  3. I grew potatoes in my back yard a number of years ago. You must hill the ground over and around the foliage as the plant matures. The object is to keep the potatoes from being exposed to the sun, If they see sun, they will turn green and not be good. They are fun to dig in the fall, and if you place straw over the plants after the cold weather has set in, you can dog potatoes even after the snow starts to fall.

  4. Wait until you see green leaves appearing.  When the stems are about 1/2 foot high pile soil up around it and keep doing this as the stem grows (known as earthing up).  In warm damp weather you may need to apply fungacide to protect from blight although some potato varieties are more resistant than others.  I planted my first early potatoes in early April and had my first dinner with them yesterday.  I have never tasted anything as nice ever before.  Well worth the effort !
