I have wanted to learn this trick for years but I can never understand it. I got pretty much every other skate trick. I just need some tips on foot placement and what tricks I need to learn this.

  1. first of all you have to be able to do your back shuv it and kickflip once you lock those in try frontside flips if you can spin them just do it without the 180

its basicly ollie and start to do a shuv it and when you start just kick your at the angle of the board so a little back and to the side

  2. ignore Dustin B he has no idea what hes talking about hes teaching u a varial not a hardflip. okay first u need to know how to do a kickflip. so setup in a kickflip position put alot of pressure on the lip let the board pop up at an 75 degree angle (about) and barely flip the board up at the nose.

  3. Actually, Dustin is right on.  There are a couple different ways that a hardflip might look, but technically it is a frontside varial, just like he said.  I keep my back foot about in the middle of the tail like a frontside shove, and my front foot basically in a kickflip position, but a little further back for me, and I face more forwards than sideways like a regular kickflip.  As you pop, the back foot shoves out, and the front foot flicks it over.  Some hardflips will go almost straight over (ie, Eric Koston) but some stay flater, giving that frontside varial flip look (Watch Tony Hawk, his look like this).  They tend to look more impressive when they flip straighter though, and that's what most people think of when they think a hard flip.
