  1. How long have the Gerbils been living together?

Have they been apart for a long amount of time?

If you have them in an aquarium I recommend trying the split cage method.

Even if they have been living together sometimes they forget each other and fight.

Click the link and scroll down to where it says "Split-Cage method"

  2. why was your gerbil in a fight?

    are you fighting your gerbils?

  3. If you haven't separated them, do so immediately.

This can happen for no reason, and it is called "declanning".

It is more likely with 3 or more, but sometimes a pair just decides they don't like each other anymore.

You can give it a couple weeks, then try and introduce them back together with the split-cage method, but it isn't likely they will be friendly again. Be prepared to provide them separate housing permanently.

As for helping him, try to keep the toys at a minimum in his cage.

I know that sounds terrible, but it helps his body heal without him exerting himself. You can also watch for limps or other troubles without things in the way.

Leave him with just a house/tube/etc to sleep in, but nothing else besides food, maybe a chew toy.

Keep checking him for scratches and bites.

Scratches can be wiped with a damp cloth and then dabbed with a little Neosporin.

Bites need to be wiped and left alone. If you see bumps form around them, or worse, pus, a vet trip is in order.

You shouldn't apply Neosporin to these, since only the top could heal and trap bacteria inside- the gerbil's body will heal it naturally.

Broken limbs should be seen by a vet, just in case it has broken into the body. They may or may not be able to help it heal, but it is still a valuable professional opinion.

  4. Well firstly separate the Gerbils which are fighting, take the injured Gerbil(s) to the Vet and get them checked out immediately. Gerbils are able to heal most injuries their self but better to be safe then sorry.

From now on I would keep these Gerbils apart. Gerbils can fight for any reason whatsoever and will fight to the death.
