My pure guess would be that this greatly depends on which psychic ability. For instance in the Ganzfeld ESP test the idea of a non patterned sensory field (white noise and red/pink light that creates no pattern) allows the mind to form images when there is lack of other sensory input.

Sleep ESP experiments are similar to this but very expensive so few replications were done.

Deprivation tanks will cause the mind to hallucinate for stimulation but this may allow the conscious mind to get in the way. In any event studies on the ESP/Deprivation tank idea are rare (if they exist at all).

If your speaking of a psychic ability besides ESP or Telepathy probably different ideas apply.

meditation is a good way. Truth is, once you've let it be known that you want to grow and expand gifts, the process, once started, will continue of its own accord. So meditation is a good b/c it helps you learn to quiet the "noise" in your mind. The psychic stuff for me very often isn't "hey! here I am!!" it's more quiet and you have to learn to "listen".

I just want to make it stop!  I'd close my eyes to make the ability go away.  I don't think that would work though.  I've thought about not sleeping so I don't dream the future!  I wish I had the ability to control what I dream!  Oh well, until that happens...  I will continue to pray that the disaster I saw is averted!
