I am thinking that hook the DVR into the VHS going to the DVD player and then into the TV using a standard coaxial cable.

  1. that's right.

but if you're willing to spend for it, i suggest you get an audio/video receiver (onkyo, denon)

  2. No .. that won't work.

The DVR, VHS and DVD player are all video/audio sources. The video output of each must be connected independently to the TV input (either to different inputs selectable by the TV input control, or through a A/V switch box, or an AV receiver).  The audio must be connected similarly.

Each can be connected via several possible types of cables ... but not coax. Each component outputs a standard video signal that the TV will accept directly if connected with an RCA composite cable (yellow jack), S-video (round black multi-pin jack) or, if available, red/blue/green RCA component cables. Audio can be connected as stereo analog (red/white RCA jacks) or digital (optical or orange RCA jack).

Since you appear unfamiliar with all of this I suggest asking a knowledgeable friend to help.
