How do you hook up xbox live 360 using a modem? ( direct hook up)?

recently my friends hooked up xbox live using a wireless router and stuff on my xbox. then he had to leave. so he un pluged everythin. he told me just to do a direct hook up. The thing is i have no idea what that is. What are the steps?

so far i took the ethernet cable out of my computer and placed it into my xbox 360 in the back. i tested the connection and it said ip address failed. what do i have to do?

if this helps- i have a Gateway using Vista and my 360 is a Arcade version, but i do have a 20 gb hardrive.

If you are using DSL you need to configure the account login credentials in the 360 (PPPoE settings). If you have cable make sure the 360 is set to obtain an IP address automatically.
