its hard to tell someone how to skate because you have to learn it on the ice yourself..

  2. Plow your skates outward, turn suddendly left or right, or bring the back of one blade towards the inner blade of your other skate (t-stop)

  3. One stop is the snowplow stop. This is wear you puch both skates out with intense force. The goal is to make snow(and stop!). Another stop is the hockey stop. This is where you skate forward and bring your right(if your right footed and left if your left footed) forward and then turn your body to the side while pushing out. In this you will also want to make snow.

When learning how to skate backwards you need to take time and practice. What you should do to get the feel of going backwards on skates, go next to a wall and stand in front of it. Put your hands flat on the wall and push off. Practice moving your legs while your going. Pumps, swizzels, and so on. As soon as you have the feel, skate away from the wall. Then try out what you were doing before. If this is too hard go back to the wall and practice more.

You can always go to youtube.com and look for videos. Such as typing in "figure skating stops" or "figure skating backwards". Below are links from expertvillage.com they should help. You can also go to google and type in skating + backwards or skating + stops. You may need to put figure before skating.

  4. I don't know if you ski, but if you do, remember the snowplow stop?  Basically, you make the shape of a pizza wedge with your feet - toes turned in to each other, the back of the blade wide like this:  /\    Put pressure on the inside edges of your blades and gently skid to a stop.

The way they teach beginners to go backwards at my rink is "wiggles".  Just wiggle your butt and keep your feet parallel to each other it - you start to move backwards.  If you get the hang of this, start shifting your weight a little as your wiggle - on your left foot when you're wiggling right, on your right when you're wiggling left.

But if you don't feel that move (some people don't) you might try backwards swizzles.  Start with your toes turned slightly inward, bend your knees, and push out on your inside edges in a semi-circle, then curve them back in so that your feet will meet in the middle again.  It should make a fishy shape, or () on the ice.

When you're going backwards, always make sure you bend your knees - not your waist.  Don't lean back, but a lot of people bend at the waist and think they're bending their knees, but their legs are too straight.  The more you bend those knees, the more stable you'll be.  Like you're sitting in a chair kind of bend - deep bend!

The girl in this video does a quick snowplow stop (mostly on her left foot) at about 35 seconds, and does backwards wiggles right afterwards.
