  1. Although taking an AP english class can help some, it might now help you, in fact it might hurt you. To me, AP english was at a much higher level then the SAT writing. If you are not doing well in the writing section, chances are, you'll think AP english is hard and struggle in the class.

Some good ways to improve your writing score is to practice the grammar section a lot. After you do a lot of the problems, you'll begin to see patterns in the questions. Also, read some prep books about the grammar tips and most commonly tested grammar rules. For the essay writing, just make sure you stick to the 5 paragraph formula (AP english teaches you much more advanced writing which is useless on the SAT because you'll be under too much pressure and the graders expects only the 5 paragraph essay). But you can have just 2 examples instead of 3. Make sure to prepare a lot of examples (personal, historical and books) beforehand. Just make sure you know a lot of different ones, that way, no matter your topic, you'll be make an example you've prepared work. And always write a conclusion, even if it's only 1 sentence. ALso, make sure your thesis is always concise, clear and 100% on topic.

  2. Taking an AP English course, such as AP Language and Composition or AP Literature, is a great way to increase your writing ability. These classes, if you are able to take them, predominantly focus on essay writing and the analysis of passages, much like those you will see on the SAT Critical Reading section. By taking AP Language, I increased my Critical Reading score from a 570 to a 670 and my essay score from an 8 to a 12. Hope this helps!

  3. I would suggest reading books. It increases your vocabulary, whether you notice it or not. Also, it gives you more references to mention on your topic. Work on your vocabulary independently, with flashcards or vocab books. Your essay will look ten times better if you use advanced vocabulary, though not enough to sound like an unnatural, robotic essay.

Also, hit up some writing courses. Many high schools have courses you can take after school, or find your favorite English teacher and ask him to help you out. Grab one of your old essays and go through it, improving and correcting it. Also, there are tons of sights were you can read 6 pt essays. You can get a good idea of what you need to work on.

Tip: My english teacher said its much better to use references to books, rather that TV shows or movies. Also, don't stick with just personal experiences. Mix it with facts, like book references or media references. Good luck!
